Social Media Roundup: What You May Have Missed

The fast-moving world of social media is constantly undergoing evolution. As a busy digital Content Manager I know how easy it is to miss an update so in the following article I take an inventory of the latest news and developments from the likes of Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Pinterest launched promoted video pins

Pinterest recently launched Promoted Video, a neat way for businesses to “share their ideas with people who are looking for them and make it easy for them to give these ideas a try.” Pinterest received a lot of traction with its new video platform, so it only made sense that the social media platform would build on those efforts with a tool like Promoted Video.

Facebook updates Page designs

The world’s biggest social network recently confirmed that it has “updated your Page’s design on desktop to make it easier for your visitors to interact with you and your Page.” These changes include a cleaner interface, more prominent buttons and sharper navigation tools. Facebook is constantly tweaking its platform by adding and subtracting subtleties, so it wouldn’t surprise me if some of these changes went unnoticed.

Twitter adds Promoted #Stickers

Twitter has confirmed that it has rolled out Promoted #Stickers, which allow businesses to build brand affinity and raise awareness of their messaging. According to Twitter, “millions of photos have been Tweeted using #Stickers in creative and dynamic ways across sports, news and entertainment” since the feature was launched several weeks ago. Promoted #Stickers will be rolled out globally to select marketers with a managed Twitter account.

Instagram business profile expands to Europe, Asia and the Middle East

Instagram business profiles are finally available to residents in Europe, Asia and the Middle East, according to a recent report by Wired Magazine. These new business profiles are influenced by Facebook’s popular business Pages. For Instagram, the business profiles have a “contact” button that allows users to interact with the brand. Wired also says these tools are also coming to the United States, Australia and New Zealand. By the end of the year, business profiles should be available globally.

More Facebook

According to Adweek, Facebook has also expanded the number of photos and videos in carousel ads. In fact, it has “quietly doubled” the number of images and videos that can be advertised in these carousels. This was confirmed by a Facebook spokesperson, who noted that the change applies globally. Investors worried about how Facebook might grow its ad revenue may have just breathed a sigh of relief!

Facebook wasn’t done there. The company’s Messenger platform underwent an important update governing marketing policies. Under the new guidelines, “all conversations between businesses and people must be initiated by the person receiving the messages. Facebook also outlined a 24-hour window for businesses to respond to a user with a promo. However, only a specific response from the user will trigger that 24-hour window.
